Introduction
Department of
Horticulture is engaged in the holistic development of Horticulture in the state and is
striving hard to help the growers of horticultural crops in the district to achieve the
fullest yield potential and to maximize profits.
The district consists of three agro climatic zones viz., southern transition
zone, hilly zone and central dry zone.Due to variable agro-climatic conditions the
district is ideally suited for the cultivation
of vide varieties of Horticulture crops like fruits, vegetables, flowers, plantation crops as
well as medicinal and aromatic plants .
The geographical area
of the district is 722075 ha .,of which an area of 319790 ha.,comes under the cultivable
area ,constituting 44.29% of the geographical area for the year 2008-09.Out of the total
cultivable area , 112930 ha.,are covered under horticulture crops (excluding coffee, tea).
Horticultural area in the district accounts
to about 35.31% of the total cultivable area .Out of 112930 ha., of the total
horticultural cropped area, the different crops covered and their extent of area is as
below.

Farms and Nurseries:-
The district has 15
Horticultural Farms/Nurseries under the control of Karnataka State Horticultural
Agency(KSHDA). These Farms/Nurseries were established for the following noble objective.
·
To
demonstrate the cultivation of various Horticultural crops in theses farms/nurseries and through which motivate the
farmers for taking up commercial cultivation of these crops.
·
To
develop these Farms and Nurseries as the centers of propagation of quality planting
materials and to supply and make available to the farming community.
·
To
develop them as the centers of introduction and acclimatization of new types and varieties
of Horticultural crops, in order to find out their suitability to the specific
agro-climatic conditions.
Therefore, in tune with the objectives, these Farms and
Nurseries have been serving the farming community since their inception, When we look from
these angle, there is no doubt that theses Farms and Nurseries have largely fulfilled the
purpose for which they have been established.
