MINOR IRRIGATION

Minor irrigation sub-division, Chickmagalur has the responsibility to look after Irrigation tanks having atchkat between 100 Acres to 5000 Acres. The head quater of the Sub-Division is located in Chickmagalur town in Kote area. It also looks after maintenance of pickups,Anicuts and Lift Irrigation schemes. It's juridication covers entire district covering Kadur, Chickmagalur, Koppa, Mudigere, N.R.Pura, Sringeri & Tarikere. The Sub-Division was shifted frjom Kadur to Chickmagalur in 1997.

Chickmagalur district has very good irrigation tanks of historical importance like, Iyyanakere, Madaga kere, Devanur kere, Vishanasamudra, Rameswara, Chikkolale & Hirekolale, Belavadi, Angadi Doddakere, Bukkambudhi, Ramanayakana kere, Parvatharayana kere. Most of the tanks out of 120 tanks fills every year. In the atchkat of Bayalu seeme commercial crops like Arecanut, Coconut, Bannana, Vegitable crops, Sugur cane and paddy are cultivated. In the Malenadu area paddy and plantation crops are grown.

There are 2 Nos. L.I. Scheme projects included in the budget. They are Lift Irrigation Scheme near T.B.Kaval in Kadur taluk for Rs. 45.00 lakhs and Lift Irrigation Scheme near Devadana village through Bhadra river near Balehonnur for Rs. 65.00 lakhs. But due to non availability of water and Reserve forest, these two Lift Irrigation Scheme projection are deleted by the Government.

For annual maintenance of M.I. tanks under 2702 Head of Account there is a provision for Rs. 31.00 lakhs. With this amount the maintence works and maintenance of the office is covered.

The Government is making an effort for the improvement of M.I. Tanks. It includes repair to tank bund, sluices, waste weir, revetment , canals, piped outlets, service roads improvement to catchment area and desiltation.

This is an enormous work, hence the Government is proposed formation of water users society . Through this society the over all improvement of tank is to be done. At present 55 societies have been identified and 12 societies are registered.

Under 'Raitha Kayaka kere' a tank on the each hobli is selected. These tanks will be taken on first priority for improvement.
