The Department of Women and Child Development is one of the major departments in the district, implementing the programs for women and children. The main objective includes social ad economic development, health and nutritional status of pregnant and nursing mothers and children. Through medias and public functions, health and nutrition camps and mothers meeting create awareness among rural women to improve overall living conditions. One of the major programme i.e., Integrated Children Development Scheme (I.C.D.S.) covers all the seven taluks in the district. Activities are conducted like pre-school education to children between 3 and 6 years and supplementary nutrition programme for all eligible 6 months to 6 years children and pregnant and lactating mothers for 300 days in a year. Quarterly health checkup is also conducted by the Medical Officers and complete immunization is done to all children.
| All the services are provided through the Anganwadi centers and in total, there are 1197 anganwadi centers in the district. We have 803 departmental own buildings out of 1197 Anganwadi centers. By 2005 A.D. it is planned to construct own buildings for all the Anganwadi centers in the district. |

Further it is planned by 2005 A.D. that number of malnourished children will be reduced to below 10% and the number of grade III and IV children will be less than one percent.
A significant
programme is being introduced by the State Government on women empowerment called "STREE
SHAKTHI" scheme. The scheme is introduced through self-help group in
rural and tribal areas with weekly savings and regular meetings at fixed places and
discuss their problems. A group consists of 15-20 women members, loan activities will be
there within the group members. To support this, after grading of the eligible groups,

be there within the group members. To strengthen Self Help Group 2918 groups have
been provided Rs. 5000/- each as Revolving fund amounting Rs.145.90 lakhs in additions to
their own savings. Further they will be trained different skill development
programme like making cup & plates in Areconel leaf, Agarbhati sticke, beauty parlour, Vermcid training, computer DTP &
fashion designs for their improvement of
economic activities.
Awards:
National award for exceptional childrens, Rajiv Gandhi Manav Seva awards for the service of children. National awards for child welfare and Kittur Rani Chennamma awards are given to publics and Institutions who have done good services for the welfare of children and women.
Udhyogini:
This is the scheme of giving loan and subsidy facilities to poor and poorest of the women to constitute income generating activities. In this scheme nationalized and other financial institutions are giving loan facilities at very low interest rates. Women development Corporation giving subsidy to those women who are eligible in this scheme. It gives 20% subsidy to general category women or may Rs.7500/-and 30% to special groups of women like S.C, S.T, Physically Handicapped, widow etc., or may Rs.10000/- maximum scheme unit is one lakh. According to the activities taken by the beneficiaries, banks are giving finance and subsidy will be released by the department.
Destitute Cottage for orphan children:
Those children who are not having parents will be admitted to the destitute cottage between the age of 12 to 18 years and providing education, food and shelter. One Chowdeshwari destitute cottage is running at Rambapuri Mutt, Balehonnur, N.R.Pura Taluk with the assistance of department.

Scheme:
1)
To
upheld the status of Female Child in the society, the
honourable Government of Karnataka introduced this scheme " Bhagayalakshmi ''
came into existence from 1.4.2006
2)
This scheme
pertained to only two female children of the family which are in the below poverty line
and also income of the family does not exeeds Rs 12000/ in
the rural parts and Rs 17000/ in the urban area.
3)
Beneficiaries
will get worth of Rs.10000/- bond from 1.4.2006
to 31.7.2008.From 1.8.2008 onwards first Beneficiary of the family will get worth of
Rs.19300/- and IInd will get worth of Rs. 18350/-face value bonds.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR CLAIMING THE
MATURITY AMOUNT UNDER BHAGYALAKSHMI SCHEME
1) Immunisation
should have been done as per the health department programme.
2) During 3 to 6 years of age she should have attended
anganwadi centre/pre-school centre regularly
3) Should
have taken admission in the school recognized by the education department.
4) Should have passed from 1st standard to
minimum 8th standard
5) Where
the family has 3 children the mother or father
should have undergone terminal family planning
method.
6) Should
not be a child labour.
7) Should
not get married
before attaining the age of 18 years.
8) They
should be no gender discrimination .
Non fulfillment of the above condition will immediately render the girl
child not
eligible for any benefits under
BHAGYALAKSHMI SCHEME.
